STATISTICAL STUDIES

The Glass Industry

After a growth in production in 2003 (+3.1%), the recessionary business climate
in 2004 resulted in an extremely limited growth rate of 0.9% for the glass industry.
No major production changes were observed in the various sectors, although both flat
glass (+1.3%) and hollow glass (+1%) posted satisfactory results. Glass yarns, however,
declined by –0.4%. The most conspicuous fluctuations were observed in the hollow
glass sector, with a decrease in the production of vases (+8.6%), vials (–7.8%),
homeware (-1.4%) and bottles (+1%).
The glass industry posted a €608 million trade surplus, with an increase compared
to 2003. Import (68.6%) and export (63.8%) shares from and to EU countries
remained virtually unchanged versus the previous year. Italy’s main trading partners
were France and Germany
